Google Maps has moved to a pay-as-you-go pricing structure.

From 16th July 2018 the Google Maps Platform adopted a freemium subscription model where users get to make a limited number of API calls for free each month. The breakdown of API call is as follows;

  • up to 28,000 free loads of Dynamic Maps; or
  • up to 100,000 free loads of Static Maps; or
  • up to 40,000 free Directions calls; or
  • up to 40,000 free Geolocation calls.

The new freemium model allows unlimited free use of simple maps in website embeds and native apps – for example, a simple map and marker location on a website contact page. A caveat to free usage is website and app owners still need to create an account and provide Google with billing details to use the APIs.
